Change your project's owner

If you need to change your project's owner, follow the steps below depending on your project’s type and scenario. This chart provides a quick overview of the actions required depending on your project type and status:

  • These steps apply if the individual listed as the owner has changed but the owner organization has not. This can be done at any time by a project manager or project administrator and does not require a change of owner agreement.
    1. Sign in to your WELL account and open your project.
    2. Go to the Edit > Owner Information tab.
    3. Make the necessary changes in the “Owner name” and / or “Owner email” fields.
    4. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page. 
  • These steps apply to any WELL Certification or WELL Rating project that needs to change the owner organization before the WELL Certification Agreement has been signed. A change of owner agreement is not required.

    1. Sign in to your WELL account and open your project.
    2. Go to the Edit > Owner Information tab.
    3. Make the necessary changes in the “Owner name” and / or “Owner email” fields.
    4. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.

  • These steps apply to WELL Certification or WELL Ratings projects where the Certification Agreement has been signed but the project has not yet achieved Certification or a Rating.
    1. Remove any documents from your project account that you do not want to transfer to the new owner.
    2. Both the original owner and new owner must complete the Change of Owner Agreement
    3. Once you have the completed agreement, sign in to your WELL account and open your project.
    4. Open the project’s Documents tab.
    5. Click Upload Document and choose Legal as the document type.
    6. Attach the completed Change of Owner Agreements and click Upload.
    7. Go to your project’s Support tab and click Get Help. Submit a request for the WELL support team to update the project’s owner, and state that you have uploaded the Change of Owner Agreement. Include the name and email address of the new owner in your request.
  • These steps apply only to WELL Core projects that have achieved Certification.
    1. Both the original owner and new owner must complete the Change of owner for transfer of documents agreement.
    2. Once you have the completed agreement, sign in to your WELL account and open your project.
    3. Open the project’s Documents tab.
    4. Click Upload Document and choose Legal as the document type.
    5. Attach the completed Change of Owner Agreements and click Upload.
    6. Go to your project’s Support tab and click Get Help. Submit a request for the WELL support team to update the project’s owner, and state that you have uploaded the Change of Owner Agreement. Include the name and email address of the new owner in your request.
    7. The new owner must sign the WELL Certification agreement.
  • To transfer ownership of a WELL Rating project after it has achieved a rating, follow the steps below. The new owner will maintain the rating until the current term expires (1 year after initial achievement). When the rating expires, the new owner will need to create a new Rating project and pay the applicable fees for a first-time Rating.

    1. Remove any documents from your project account that you do not want to transfer to the new owner.
    2. Both the original owner and new owner must complete the Change of Owner Agreement
    3. Once you have the completed agreement, sign in to your WELL account and open your project.
    4. Open the project’s Documents tab.
    5. Click Upload Document and choose Legal as the document type.
    6. Attach the completed Change of Owner Agreements and click Upload.
    7. Go to your project’s Support tab and click Get Help. Submit a request for the WELL support team to update the project’s owner, and state that you have uploaded the Change of Owner Agreement. Include the name and email address of the new owner in your request.

    If the project's rating has expired and the project is archived, the new owner will need to create a new project and start the WELL Rating process from the beginning.

  • Ownership cannot be transferred in these cases. The new owner must create a new project and pursue WELL Certification for the new project. 
  • Because the project's WELL Precertification was awarded based on intent-stage documentation describing what the original owner intended to do, Precertification cannot be transferred to the new owner. You may still transfer the project to the new owner but its Precertified status will be removed. The new owner may choose to pursue Precertification if they would like but it is not required.
    1. Remove any documents from your project account that you do not want to transfer to the new owner.
    2. Both the original owner and new owner must complete the Change of Owner Agreement
    3. Once you have the completed agreement, sign in to your WELL account and open your project.
    4. Open the project’s Documents tab.
    5. Click Upload Document and choose Legal as the document type.
    6. Attach the completed Change of Owner Agreements and click Upload.
