X01.2 Restrict Mercury

  • Updated

This article identifies some of the most common reasons that documentation for feature X01.2 - Restrict Mercury - is marked as pending in preliminary documentation review (WELL Certification) or round 1 (WELL at scale) reviews. This guidance does not include all possible reasons for a pending status, but provides information and context based on common review issues.

Sample documentation is available for this feature part–be sure to reference this resource as you prepare your documentation.

Provide Product Specification Sheets

Feature X01.2 can be verified through manufacturer specification sheets for each distinct applicable product installed in the project (up to a maximum of 10) OR a narrative that identifies applicable laws that prohibit the sale of products not compliant with RoHS restrictions.

Submitted manufacturer specification sheets must cover applicable newly installed items, and be comprehensive in their specifications. Common products requiring specification sheets include:

  • Fire alarms
  • Meters
  • Sensors
  • Relays
  • Thermostats
  • Load Break Switches

Sometimes, product specifications may lack clarity on restricted substance content. Make sure all specification sheets submitted clearly show relevant product information, including mercury content restrictions. Annotate documents if necessary to clearly highlight relevant product information for reviewers.

Provide a Designer Letter of Assurance

Feature X01.2 requires a Letter of Assurance completed and signed by a designer. Ensure that the letter is fully complete. Check for:

  • Missing signatures (usually towards the bottom of the LOA)
  • Sections not checked or initialed
  • The correct type of letter corresponding to the feature. (i.e. For X01.2, ensure a Designer Letter of Assurance is submitted)

RoHS Compliance Documentation

Feature X01.2 can also be met by demonstrating compliance with relevant RoHS restrictions. Please keep in mind that documentation must show compliance with European Union RoHS standards, not China RoHS standards (projects located in China may use EP #00304).

In some cases, projects may require a narrative that identifies applicable laws that prohibit the sale of products not compliant with RoHS restrictions. If this is the case for your project, please ensure that any and all applicable laws are identified.

Document Equivalencies, Alternative Adherence Paths or Crosswalks

Some projects may choose to meet Feature X01.2 through the use of an Equivalency, Alternative Adherence Path (AAP) or Crosswalk. There are multiple alternative pathways to complying with X01.2, including meeting relevant LEED, BREEAM and China Standard GB/T parts. When submitting for an Equivalency, AAP or Crosswalk, always ensure:

  • Proper documentation is included for the type of Equivalency/AAP pursued
    • AAPs often require some form of documentation to be submitted. The ruling providing approval to pursue the AAP will contain details about any additional documentation that your team must submit.
  • All Equivalency documentation is properly tagged
  • Any Crosswalk or Skybridge documentation is included in your submission
