We understand that project timelines can vary, and IWBI provides flexibility to enroll projects that are looking to gain access to our support channels, promote their WELL commitment and lock in a specific version of the WELL Standard. Depending on your project's needs, please see the available extension options below.
WELL Certification / WELL Core
The enrollment date for WELL Certification projects is based on the enrollment invoice payment date. Depending on the original payment/enrollment date, the enrollment fee covers either 3 or 5 years to pursue WELL Certification (see the FAQs below for more details). If a project needs more time to achieve certification, project teams may request an extension.
WELL Ratings
Upon enrollment and enrollment invoice payment, WELL Rating projects have one year to achieve a rating. If a project needs more time, project teams may request an extension.
If your project has already achieved a WELL Rating and needs more time to support the rating renewal, please review our guidance here.

Project Extensions FAQ
- Extensions can be requested through the support tab in your WELL digital account.
- We recommend requesting an extension within 1 year of expiration. Extensions are added on to the current expiration date.
- Yes. Projects can submit multiple 1-year extension requests as needed. Each extension will be applied to the latest expiration date.
-
If you believe your project has already expired please contact IWBI as soon as possible. If your project has not been closed, an extension can be applied retroactively to the original expiration date. If the project has been closed or archived based on non-activity and expiration, a new project will need to be enrolled based on the current version of the WELL Standard.
For example, if your project expired 6 months ago and you apply for a 1 year extension, you will receive an additional 6 months to submit your documents.
-
- Projects enrolled before April 29, 2022 have a 5-year period to undergo performance verification.
- Projects enrolled after April 29, 2022 have a 3-year period to achieve certification.
- No. The original payment/enrollment date applies. Upgrading to a new version is an option for projects, but it does not change the original enrollment date. For example, if the project originally enrolled under v2pilot on March 3, 2021 and later upgraded to v2 on January 8, 2024 the WELL Certification Agreement will expire March 3, 2026.
